Hello, 2016! It’s my first blog post of the new year and I’m looking back on how I brought in 2016, by celebrating the new year in Los Angeles.
Last Minute Planning
Don’t you love it when last minute planning comes together and makes for an amazing experience?
That’s what inspired my spur of the moment trip to Los Angeles with the boyfriend. We didn’t have any concrete plans for celebrating New Year’s Eve and ringing in the New Year. We kept pushing off trying to finalize our plans until a couple of nights before.
After a suggestion from a friend and things falling into place, we decided to celebrate the new year in Los Angeles!
Celebrating the New Year in Los Angeles
What better way to bring in the new year than at the happiest place on earth? We decided to spend New Years Eve at Disneyland. Also on the itinerary for our impromptu trip to Los Angeles: New Year’s day at the Rose Bowl and exploring the sights around L.A.
Day One: New Year’s Eve at Disneyland
We drove down to L.A. from the Bay Area on the morning of New Year’s Eve. It was our first road trip together for me and the boyfriend, so I was interested to see what it would be like being
trapped in a car together for 5+ hours. Luckily, we survived and everything went smoothly.
We got park hopper tickets that allowed us to explore both the Disneyland and California Adventure parks. The parks are actually open later for New Year’s Eve (California Adventure closes at 1 a.m. and Disneyland closes at 2 a.m.) so that gave us plenty of time to explore both parks.
We arrived at Disneyland later in the evening, which I actually preferred. It was a little less crowded and since most of the families left after the fireworks show at midnight, the lines weren’t as long for the last 2 hours of the park being open.
I love that no matter how old I get, I always really enjoy my time at Disneyland! Some of my favorite rides include Astro Orbitor, Mad Tea Party, and Toy Story Midway Mania. I’m not a fan of roller coasters (I have a fear of heights and falling so I’m not about that life) so I love that there are a lot of different ride and attraction options at Disneyland.
Since California Adventure was scheduled to close first, we spent the first part of our trip there. California Adventure provides a lot of options for its older visitors based on the attractions there and the fact that they offer alcoholic beverages (Disneyland and margaritas? I was definitely a fan).
We were hoping to walk over to the Disneyland park in time for the fireworks show at midnight. Unfortunately, we left California Adventure too late (*sad face*). The entrance to Disneyland park was blocked off by a large crowd of people so we were stuck in between the two parks. We were able to see a few fireworks but didn’t get a good view of the whole show.
Here’s a helpful tip: if you’re planning to watch the fireworks show at Disneyland, you should probably try and find a good viewing spot at least 30 minutes before the show is scheduled. Or at the very least, be in the right park…unlike us haha.
Missing the fireworks show didn’t stop us from getting great pictures at the park. And the fun didn’t stop at midnight! They had a DJ set up in front of Cinderella’s castle who was playing music after the fireworks show.
Couldn’t leave without a picture of the castle!
I love the teacups ride!
How To Dress For Disneyland
Curious about how to dress to Disneyland or other amusement parks?
My biggest tips would be to dress in layers and to dress for comfort.
Although it might be warmer in the afternoon, if you’re planning to stay at the park later into the evening, it can get pretty chilly. This is where dressing in layers will come in handy!
It’s also important to dress comfortably. You’ll be spending hours on your feet, standing in lines, and sitting on rides, so it’s great to wear clothes that aren’t restricting and shoes that are easy to walk in.
For my Disneyland outfit, I decided to go with a long-sleeved shirt layered on top of a white tank top, a jean jacket, black jeggings, and Nike sneakers. I also wore a light scarf for extra warmth and my adorable Minnie Mouse ears!
Overall, I had such an amazing time celebrating New Year’s Eve at Disneyland. I would definitely go again!
