Seeing It Through

If you’ve been visiting the blog for a while, you might know that I participated in this challenge last year. I started off pretty well and tracked my progress. I also shared more about my natural hair journey, so feel free to check that out if you’re interested. Although I will admit, I fell off after a while. However, this year I’m committed to actually seeing it through to the end.

One of the biggest challenges of picking up a new habit is being consistent and making it part of your routine. I know I can’t be the only one who has gotten super excited about a challenge…only to completely fall off a week later. I mean…let’s talk about all of those New Year’s Resolutions we promised to keep. Although, I do hope you’re doing much better keeping up with them this year since we’re going into week 3 of 2017.

Being consistent is where I fell through with things last time. I didn’t stay consistent or check in with myself to make sure I was actually completing all of the challenge components. I’m going into week 3 of the challenge now and I think I’m doing a much better job of holding myself accountable.

Retain Your Mane Hair Growth Challenge

Let’s talk about this hair growth challenge! As I mentioned, this challenge is hosted by Trials n’ Tresses and is set to take place from January 1st to March 1st. You can sign up for the challenge here.

By signing up, you’ll receive a monthly calendar with the challenges for each week, information about the various giveaways they’re hosting (free stuff?? sign me up!), and various articles to help set you up for success. I love that you receive articles with tips like best oils for pre-poo treatments, benefits of steaming your hair, etc.

Fun Fact: Steaming your hair provides a moisturizing environment, which is especially important in the dry winter months.

Each week has a different area to focus on in order to promote hair growth. Even if you don’t join in on the challenge right now, I would sign up to get all of the resources and suggestions for things you can add to your hair routine to promote hair growth.

Goal #1: Decrease Shedding

The first week of the challenge really focused on those basic hair care fundamentals and building a routine as well as decreasing shedding.

  • Taking a multivitamin or hair vitamin daily (I’ll be taking The Mane Choice Manetabolism Vitamins)
  • Drinking 2 liters of water a day
  • Pre-pooing your hair once a week
  • Deep conditioning once a week
  • Massaging your scalp twice a week
  • Steaming your hair twice a week (I’ll be using the Q-Redew handheld hair steamer)
Quick Tip: In order to make this routine easier to maintain, I combine several steps into one day. For instance, on Sundays I start with a pre-poo treatment and massage an oil into my scalp, then wash/shampoo/deep condition, while the deep conditioner is still in my hair I use the steamer. That’s four steps at once!

This first week was really great for helping me establish a hair routine and setting the stage for the rest of the challenge. I also shared some of the products I used for this first week on Instagram.

Goal #2: Eat Clean

The second week has been all about hair care from within. Like losing weight and having clear skin, a lot of appearance changes you want to see starts from within. So, this week is all about promoting hair growth through healthy eating habits.

We continued the hair care regimen from last week and added more to the challenge:

  • Make 3 green smoothies
  • Eat something green with each meal
  • Cut out soda/alcohol and carbonated drinks for 5 days

Now, I was able to stay consistent with the hair care regimen. But, I wasn’t as good with the eating clean. Ok…I was good with the green smoothies (although I bought rather than made it) and cut out drinks. I just didn’t keep up with eating green with each meal. But, eating healthier is one of my resolutions I wanted to work on so I already know this is an area for improvement.
